what spotify wrapped reveals about you

2022

Fuck clickbait. You have to admit though- it’s effective sometimes. But in terms of news, social media, youtube, clickbait can be annoying. Especially, when the title doesn’t match what you clicked on and you end up wasting time (we all hate that). It sucks that people have to refer to that ‘technique’ to grasp our attention. Ironically, it led me to be more aware on what I’m consuming, which helped me ‘filter my consumption habits’. A lot of Instagram is ‘clickbaity’ content and too many people are addicted to mindlessly scrolling (no hate). After years of not seeing ‘you’re all caught up’, I began to reach the end of my feed after unfollowing / muting people. I highly recommend doing that if you also caught yourself scrolling too much for no reason. I just think we all can have a little less instagram but who am I to judge. (ironic saying but it’s true- I appreciate you reading this oh yeah)

So.. Spotify wrapped. That time of the year where your instagram is filled with people’s music tastes and listening habits. They did not include Top Albums again.. so I edited my Wrapped from 2021 to include my 5 favorite albums from last year.

2021 & improved

For someone who listens to albums consistently (other than shuffling playlists) it’s annoying to not have ‘Top Albums’ as an available category because it’s more personal to me than ‘Top Songs’ - albums are how I consume, find, and rate music. I don’t care what my most played songs of the year are as much - there’s also a difference between ‘most played’ and ‘favorite’ songs. My ‘Top Songs’ can contain a song off my morning playlist, a hip-hop song that I can play around family, and maybe actual ‘favorites’. Top albums would be more reflective of my favorite albums because I deliberately have to press on that album to play it. Apple Music has top albums! What’s the reason for not adding Top Albums year after year Spotify? I will admit though, the Top 100 Songs playlist is great due to its non-skip nature.

Not to sound like a hater, Spotify wrapped is dope. It makes people reflect on their favorite songs/artists of the year and sparks conversations with your friends. But Top Albums and Top New Artists should be added for sure. I’ve had Mac/X/Juice stay in my top 5 artists for 3 years in a row (this year X didn’t make the ‘cut’) so for someone who listens to music an above average amount of time, it would be cool to at least expand the list of top artists to 10/15/20 to make up for my reoccurring artists. Can’t Spotify just display all those statistics they keep on us as pretty categories? 2022 has been a great year for music with countless timeless albums.

check out my AOTY’s if you like hip-hop and want some new music (from 2022). for non hip-hop people you might be turned on by: Jean Dawson’s: CHAOS NOW*. if really no hip-hop then Steve Lacy’s Gemini Rights. love
